Within a short time he made a strong foothold in his line of trade in Calcutta and virtually became the market leader. He expanded his business links with the erstwhile East Bengal, now Bangladesh, Prior to partition of Bengal during British regime. With the passage of time he also diversified into trading of plastic based products and gradually passed on the batton to his only son Kali Charan who learnt the art of business from his father and made substantial improvement in business before the demise of Pragdas Gupta. Unfortunately Kali Charan Gupta died prematurely leaving behind his four minor sons namely Shri Sanjay Kumar, Amit Kumar, Abhay Kumar and Pankaj Kumar and two minor daughters. As Kali Charan Gupta was not keeping good health, his eldest son Sanjay although in his teens had to join the business with his father. After the demise of Kali Charan Gupta gradually all other three sons joined the family business and initially converted the proprietorship firm to a partnership and subsequently converted to a limited company in the year 1984 to keep pace with the increased business, especially with Bangladesh after its birth as an independent country. It opened up vast business opportunities for export of various other items like Chemicals, Minerals, Engineering goods, Food grains, Textile goods etc. In the meantime Bangladesh became a major exporter of ready made garments and knitted fabrics to the European and American markets by virtue of being a non-quota country. In the process it started generating huge demand for Indian Cotton yarn and fabrics as raw materials. LGW encased the opportunity to the maximum extent and became the number one merchant exporter in India for Cotton Yarn. Gradually it started exporting textile machinery, raw cotton also and enlarged the export destinations from Bangladesh to several other countries.
