Moving Indian Cotton Industry into the 21 st Century
India at present is the worlds third
largest cotton producer and the second largest producer of textile goods.
Due to implementation of the countrys Textile Up-gradation
Found Programme with a view to prepare the industry to pake on the
Post-Quota regime after 2005 and also as a result of the pragmatic economic
reforms initiated by the Govt. of India, serious developments are taking
place currently in the raw cotton, cotton fabric and cotton textile industry
sector.
The Countrys Cotton Crop Production which stagnated in the 1990s at
about 13 million bales, is set to cross the 25 million bales in the current
year.
Indian Cotton producers are continuously working to up-grade the quality
and increase the cotton production to cope up with the increased global
demand for cotton textiles and to meet the needs of the 39 million spindles
capacity of the domestic textile industry which presently consumes about
12-14 million bales annually.
